Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration

The Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) treaty created a framework of collaboration between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda for the conservation of wildlife and tourism development of the shared natural heritage across their borders in the Central Albertine Region, herein referred as Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL). The GVL natural resources comprise of a variety of ecosystems with a host of threatened and migratory species including lions, hippopotamus, chimpanzees, golden monkey, leopards, okapi, golden cats, crowned eagles, buffaloes, lesser flamingos, vultures, Rwenzori duikers, sitatunga, mountain gorillas, and elephants. These threatened species are the corner stone for poverty reduction, sustainable livelihood improvement and sustainable development. Their successful protection will help achieve these desired outcomes prioritized by the partner states.

This portal was built to create transparency and accountability to the various stake holders on how the different resources of the Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL) are being managed. It will be updated periodically to keep every one informed on what is going on in the Landscape. It consists of four main tabs; Key species, Deforestation, Revenue sharing and Dashboard.

The Key species tab contains maps showing the location of key animal species along with their habitats within the GVL. The Deforestation tab contains maps showing areas of GVL forests that have been cut down. The Revenue sharing tab contains filterable maps showing population, population density and amount of funds provided to residents in the area by GVTC. The Dashboard contains charts and graphs on animal population, patrol coverage, trafficking, crop raids, arrests and deforestation
